Tech Can Be a Market Differentiator to Attract Staff

BY LeadingAge

In the era of workforce shortages, senior living organizations should consider using technology and policies as a market differentiator to attract staff. Doing so is an especially effective way to attract millennials, said Majd Alwan, Ph.D., CAST executive director and LeadingAge vice president of business strategy.

Alwan spoke on a virtual panel about digitally enabled care for older adults at the Information Technology in Aged Care (ITAC) International Forum on Sept. 23, 2021. Australian Ageing Agenda reported on the forum and on Alwan’s remarks.

Because millennials grew up with digital technology and are comfortable with it, Alwan reportedly asked, “How do we expect them to come and work in an environment where they have to go back to pen and paper and waste time?”

Tech education vital to staff satisfaction” also shared Alwan’s thoughts that because workers can get better pay in the acute care sector, attracting workers to senior living is difficult.

LeadingAge is identifying case studies where technology has improved staff efficiencies, satisfaction, and retention, he said. One is included in the new updates to the LeadingAge CAST Telehealth and RPM Selection Tool, described in this month’s Tech Time article “Reduce Hospitalizations with Updated CAST Telehealth Tool.”

On the panel, Alwan joined senior living experts from around the world who faced similar challenges in their countries. In Singapore, needs include digital education and lifelong learning. In Canada, many long-term care facilities do not even have Wi-Fi. Australia needs investment in digitally enabled care for older adults.
