Affordable housing for low-income seniors saves lives, and all low-income older adults deserve a safe and affordable place to live.
July 19, 2023 Washington, DC — Statement from Katie Smith Sloan, president and CEO of LeadingAge, the association of nonprofit providers of aging services, including affordable housing for low-income older adults, on actions taken during the July 18 FY2024 Transportation-Department of Housing and Urban Development (THUD) appropriations markup to make additional funding cuts for projects serving LGBTQ+ households with low incomes:
“Affordable housing for low-income seniors saves lives, and all low-income older adults deserve a safe and affordable place to live. The additional cuts made yesterday in the house’s HUD FY24 funding bill could snatch away the chance for a safe and affordable home from low-income LGBTQ+ older adults. As America grows older and more diverse, we must support older adults in need—without qualification or discrimination.
The committee’s appropriations already included unthinkable cuts that demonstrate lawmakers’ tremendous disregard for low-income older adults who rely on federally assisted housing—and a serious lack of foresight about this country’s future housing needs.
LeadingAge’s mission-driven, nonprofit members who provide homes to low-income older adults in federally assisted housing serve everyone, and their communities are enriched and strengthened because of this diversity in providers and residents.”
